closure torque test iconClosure Torque Testing

Closure Torque Testing is a measure of the torque force required to either apply or remove a twist cap, stopper or lid on a container. This is frequently a two-stage measurement. If the cap is tamper-evident, strip torque, breakaway torque and bridge torque are measured. If the closure is child-resistant, measurement of the required release forces must also be made. Correct performance of container closures is always quality-critical, and in many cases it is safety-critical. (See Testing Reclosable Child-resistant Closures.)

Benefits of closure torque testing

These include:

  • Ensuring the proper functioning of closures e.g. openability
  • Ensuring the integrity and safety of products
  • Reducing material costs and achieving lean manufacturing goals
  • Compliance with industry standards

Closure torque test standards

A number of standards for testing container closures have been developed. For example:

  • ASTM D2063 Measurement of Torque Retention for Packages with Continuous Thread Closures Using Non-automated (manual) torque testing equipment
  • ASTM D3810 Standard Test Method for Minimum Application Torque of Type IA Child-Resistant Closures
  • ASTM D3198 Test Method for Application and Removal Torque of Threaded or Lug-Style Closures
  • ASTM D3472 (Withdrawn January 2016) Test Method for Reverse-Ratchet Torque of Type IA Child-Resistant Closures
  • BS EN ISO 13127 Packaging - Child resistant packaging - mechanical test methods for reclosable child resistant packaging systems
